The best way to grow vegetables for your family is in your own greenhouse. You have control over the amounts of water and fertilizer you use, as well as whether or not to use pesticides. Natural, non-chemical pesticides, for instance, are an earthfriendly alternative to commercially farmed vegetables.

Solar-powered hydroponic systems are an inexpensive alternative to methyl bromide fumigation; methyl bromide is an oderless, colorless gas used to control pests that has been shown to contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer. The EPA cites the advantages of hydroponics as being:

• absence of weeds, pests, and toxic residues
• water conservation (use 1/10 amount of water used in irrigated agriculture)
• easily alterable condition to suit specific crops, various growth stages, and climate conditions
• brings fresh oxygen to the root zone, making it a highly efficient and cost-effective technology
• more efficient root systems contribute to more valuable above-ground stems, foliage, and fruit
• plants can be planted closer together
